Types of Solar Batteries

There are two predominant technologies used in the manufacture of Solar Batteries and they are Lead-Acid and Lithium-ion.  Lead-acid batteries are the most common technology used in solar battery storage applications. The different types of lead-acid batteries and technologies have been developed for particular applications.

Some of the main types used for solar power systems include AGM or Absorbitive Glass Matt batteries are Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries with fibreglass matting used as separators between the plates and more typically more resilient than their flooded counterparts. They are easier to transport, unspillable and are also sealed making them maintenance-free, they never do to be topped up or refilled as the liquid is sealed in its airtight housing, which means it will take years longer for it to drop in electrolytes without any maintenance.

Gel batteries are made when silica-gel is mixed with liquid lead-acid to form a more solid-state to prevent spilling in the unlikely event that the battery case is split or broken open making them safer to use. Gel batteries have a slower discharge rate and can recover more quickly from extended periods of non-use or being deeply discharged. This makes them better for applications where they may not be in constant cyclic use such as for UPS or backup power storage.

Deep cycle batteries are economical when used to levels of deep discharge and can recover from being discharged as much as 80%, where typical flooded car batteries will not last near as many cycles. They can be cycled 100's even 1000's of times at regular DOD (depth of discharge) rates of 30-50%.

Lithium-ion batteries are the winner when it comes to the number of cycles which can be achieved with quick recovery and little negative effect on its capacity and ongoing storage capability. The one pitfall when it comes to Li-ion solar battery technology is the high cost of manufacture. Though if you are looking for the most resilient easily accessible energy storage solution, they will provide it most effectively with very slow self-discharge rates for long term reliable power storage even with extended periods of non-use.

Sizing your Battery Bank

When sizing your systems battery bank, it is recommended, particularly for off-grid energy systems to have a battery capacity which would last 3 full days of use even without any charging. This is to have a lower depth of discharge (Optimal 30-40%) prolonging the lifespan and number of cycles you can achieve in the batteries lifespan. Also, it will allow for backup storage and uninterrupted power in extended periods of overcast, rainy or low sun-hour conditions as your solar PV modules will not be operating at full efficiency.
